Why Nothing Would Impact The Tech Industry In A Huge Way?
And when I say Nothing, I mean that weird company founded by the founder of another company…
Nothing Technology Limited or just NOTHING as they call themselves is probably the company you need to ask help for when it comes to naming a company. It’s the best you know, imagine a guy coming to asking what you’ve got. Everyone knows the obvious joke I’m about to make so… never mind.
It was founded in 2020. So as you can guess, there is so much history to talk about this company and I wish I was not sarcastic here. The creator of this, Carl Pei(can somebody teach me how to pronounce his last name) who was the co-founder of OnePlus(yes… He (co)found 2 companies and both of them are a banger) had a lot of disagreements, with his other co-founders and managers and therefore left his own company and started another one, calling it Nothing with the intention of not going in the wrong way this time and doing it his way… again.
They started it off by giving AirPod a competition with the nothing earbuds. Now… you have to remember that nothing is very very new. It started off in 2020 and now it has become a competition to other companies like Apple, Samsung, etc. And the best part is that they did not even use the fact their CEO/founder is from OnePlus as their marketing strategy. This is simply genius.
They ended up getting investment from people like Tony Fadell, the literal maker of AirPods, Kevin, the co-founder of Twitch, Steve Huffman, the CEO of Reddit, and other major tech YouTubers. This, considering that they are very new, is phenomenal. Their plan has been either completely too much luck or just flawless without a scar.
How They Did This?
They created a massive hype with their next product-The nothing phone. Ladies and gentlemen, this hype they created is not some ordinary hype you get on the roadside. They had a full-on team for just creating the hype they expected to get which is actually the only reason they grew and their biggest strength. From the hardware design with that amazing backlight(although the battery goes away much faster) to the amazing unique android skin(although all the software is pretty much having the same functionality as stock android). The hype they created started a huge group of people to talk about it. This group is called influencers… or dare I say YouTubers. Every tech YouTube channel I follow created a video on this phone to such a level, that I got bored of getting videos on literally the same product with a different taste of language, commentary, and opinions.
I mean… There is a level to which you could sustain people talking about just the same 2 products. Since I just talk and consume a lot of tech and development-related content, YouTube did its job of recommending the videos of tech YouTubers, all showing that phone in the thumbnail, and the next day I knew I was in for some more. I thought, maybe Instagram's algorithm is better and meta did a beautiful job of proving me wrong.
Anyways, that is the real reason why Nothing blew everything. I have a friend who got a Nothing phone and asked about his experience of using it. He said that it was the best product in the world in the most sarcastic tone possible. Considering that its software is developed in just the past couple of years, its camera software is not at all even close to competing with Apple’s or Samsungs phones.
Nothing seems to be taking the complete opposite design of Apple(being transparent) to actually be its competitor. I’m not gonna lie, they are fairly successful in what they did in the 2 years of their chance. But as you might know after the time of having hype, stuff like cancel culture, criticisms, etc comes in. This is what think is phase 2 of popularity — continue growing, and as far as I can see they are doing a fairly good job in what they are doing, although the transition is not yet here. I’m not the best person in marketing lol(I’m nominated for the worst though), but this is just my opinion.
So… hope that was something useful to you guys. These are just my thoughts, so feel free to talk about what you think in the comments/reply section. I’ll make more videos and tweets on this on my YouTube channel and Twitter. With that said, I think that’s enough talking, I’ll meet you at the next one.
Also, I’m on Patreon, so if you want to support my open source software, my articles, YouTube videos, etc, consider contributing out there :)
